The literal translation of De Hapjeshoek is The Snack Corner.
In the corner of metro station Waterlooplein sits a nice little hidden gem called De Hapjeshoek. I’ve heard many good things about this small restaurant, and every day it seems to be very busy around dinner time, lots of people getting their food to take away, or simply eating inside while the world moves on and people commute from work to home. Every time I pass by, it feels like the guests are enjoying their food and putting their busy lives on pause for a bit to enjoy some Surinamese goodness.

One time I felt the need to try it out, so I went in and ordered a “bami kipsaté speciaal” together with a Fernandes Super Pineapple. If you order the special variant of a meal you get a big plate with a number of sides whose names I no longer remember, so to make your life (and mine) easier, here is a picture of the kipsaté speciaal.

You can pick between bami (noodles), nasi (fried rice) and plain white rice. The service was fast and clear as expected from a restaurant in a metro station. The tables are cleaned before your food is served, and they tidy up regularly in between as well. The place is neat, and the employees are very friendly and happy to explain their menu.
The food? Well, it was great! You get a big plate to fill your tummy, and that is plenty of fuel for the rest of the day. The only thing I can complain about is the seating: the place is very small and fills up quickly, especially during rush hour. This is definitely not somewhere to go when you want to take it easy and chat with friends. But for good, fast and affordable food, you should definitely try it out.
Also everything is halal! With certificate!
